Dialect Coach

To act in a foreign language is a challenge: how do you connect the voice to the emotions, articulate clearly and follow the thought process without sounding fake? You want to feel free to concentrate on your acting when you are filming and not feel inhibited by the foreign language. This is why good preparation is essential.

As one of the first dialect coaches in Germany, I started my work with Michael Fassbender in Tarantino´s Inglourious Basterds and then in X-men- Apocalypse. Following the success of these partnerships, I worked with Cate Blanchett and Saoirse Ronan in Looking for Hannah,  Crispin Glover in Hiszpanka, and the second season of the TV series Berlin Station. All of the actors were not native German speakers, but had to act convincingly in German.

Netflix, Epix and Amazon have all started to produce films and TV series. They produce in Europe for the American audience. The cast consists also of German or other European actors who have to speak clearly  and understandably English - with a slight accent. This has to be practiced beforehand.

I prepped Sylvester Groth, Thomas Kretschmann, Jens Niewöhner, Steffen Wink, Saskia Rosendahl and many others whose names are too many to mention here..

Lately...

Mickey Rourke in Berlin I love You. In one episode of this movie - Love is in the Air - Mickey Rourke has a nine minute long scene!! with top model Toni Garrn in a bar, directed by Til Schweiger. The scene is intense and very touching. Then they continue in a hotel room … What an experience - to be on set as their dialogue coach! August 2017

In the second season of the American EPIX TV Series Berlin Station from April to September 2017 I will be on set as the German dialect coach. Big chance for me to learn so much more about the business. I feel lucky.

Kongens Nei (2016) by Erik Poppe is a Norwegian/ Swedish/ Danish film. On the 9th of April 1940, the German war machine arrives in the city of OsloThe Norwegian King faces a choice that will change his country forever. Everyone in the crew seems to feels strongly about this crucial moment in Norways history. I am a fan of Norwegian films and especially their actors. Very happy to be involved.

Hiszpanka (2014) by Łukasza Barczyka is a Polish film where I coached Crispin Glover. His character is devilish and at the same time very charismatic. Good combination.

Michael Fassbender in Inglorious Basterds by Quentin Tarantino (2009) and in X Men Days of Future Past (2014) had some German dialogue and I was more than happy to be with him on set to assist with that. What a great actor. So friendly and funny. His humor is wonderful.

Cate Blanchett and Saoirse Ronan in Hanna by Joe Wright was shot in Berlin and I coached both of them. Both very impressive actresses. Unbelievably captivating.
